Born 1976, Shimodate, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan

Born in Shimodate, Ibaraki Prefecture, SUTŌ SATOSHI initially studied under Kikuchi Hiroshi (b. 1954). Then, after completing studies at Ibaraki Prefectural Ceramics Training Institute in 2004, he apprenticed with master ceramist Itō Motohiko (b. 1939), who was known for impressing fabric patterns onto his surfaces before painting delightful, polychrome images based on nature. Sutō himself decorates his ceramics with numerous tiny impressed patterns, suggestive of his teacher’s influence. Varying the size and shape of his stamped patterns, he strives to create a striking three-dimensional surface effect that also enhances the play of light and shadow across each vessel.
